Today, March 18, is the first day to file paperwork and petitions for a place on the primary ballot to become the Democratic nominee for the sixth congressional district. Thanks to the hard work of my campaign team, family, friends, Democratic committees, and Young Democrats up and down the district, I am submitting my paperwork at noon.
I met with Rod on Friday at his request and learned of his decision to suspend his campaign today.
I agree with his assessment that we must immediately start the contest against Ben Cline. I am humbled by his faith in my ability to win this race and deeply grateful for his pledge of support. Please join me in thanking Rod for helping inspire hope that we can win this race and for offering to serve in a different role so that we can focus on winning. Rod epitomizes the Air Force motto of “service before self.”
I look forward to working closely with Rod as we take the fight to Cline.
If no candidate comes forward by April 4, I will become the nominee to challenge Cline. If that happens, it will be 50 years to the day after my enlistment in the military, when I took the oath to defend our nation for the first time. At age 18, I thought heroes were individuals. At 68, older, and wiser, I know that democracy is won and protected by individuals and communities coming together to set a course for a future where everyone can thrive. At this critical point in our nation, we are each called to be a hero in the defense of democracy and the common good. I am grateful to everyone who has stepped up to support this campaign.
Now, let’s go win!
